Derek will discuss the latest James Webb Space Telescope findings and share what is to come with NASA missions like the Europa Clipper Mission.\nSpeaker Bio:\nEver since Derek could remember\, he has been looking to the stars. This constant fascination with astronomy gave him the inspiration he needed to soar through the many stellar journeys he has experienced throughout his life. While a student finishing his Physics and Technical Education degrees\, he landed a position at the Seminole State College Planetarium in Sanford\, Florida. Over much of the last decade\, his passion for teaching people about the wonders of the universe has earned him accolades and recognition from the planetarium industry\, his peers\, and the community\, such as currently serving as the Executive Secretary of the International Planetarium Society. He works hard presenting programs to both the community at large and to students of all ages. DESCRIPTION:CFAS is proud to announce that its members have been working closely with Sally Ride Elementary School to help them prepare for their ARISS project. \nSally Ride Elementary has been selected amongst a very short list of schools to spend 10 minutes talking through HAM radio to the astronauts on board the ISS the second week of December. \nSally Ride approached CFAS for help preparing and our members jumped in\, organizing an outreach star party\, and participating in teach-in day as well as offering through our Observation Chair Mr. Derek Demeter\, a field trip to the Emil Buehler Planetarium for the entire magnet class (70 students). \nStay Tuned for a report on the actual event! \n

DESCRIPTION:Hello dear members!\n\nI cannot believe we are almost at the end of the year. And what year it was! So many astronomical events (total solar eclipse\, comet C/2023 A3\, holding our breath for T CrB recurrent nova…) \nThis year\, we held 51 outreach events in schools and at various educational institutions\, throughout the year thanks to the dedication of our Outreach Chair\, Douglas Woods. We also had our monthly recurrent online general meetings with top speakers that our President Frank Kane always programs and hosts superbly. Of course\, we could not have the reach we have without the tireless efforts of our VP and director of the Planetarium\, Derek Demeter\, thanks to whom we can offer our in person general meetings at the Emil Buehler Planetarium! This year we have implemented a new format for those meetings\, with hands-on workshops on different subjects\, which seem to have been met with lots of positive feedback. And for that we have to thank our Board Members at Large Mark Pernal and John Pinto\, as well as our Loaner Telescope Chair\, Chris Hunt and dedicated members such as Wes Klehm\, and Barbara Harris. Of course\, this could not be happening without the behind the scene hard work of our Secretary Denice Woody\, our Treasurer John Frank\, and our membership Chair Sam Selig who all make sure your dues are put to good work for the benefit of our community. I wanted to send a big shout out to our team of volunteers for all their hard work. \nBut mainly\, none of this would be happening without your continued support of our non-profit organization. DESCRIPTION:       \n  \n  \n  \nASTRONOMY IN THE ARTS\n  \n  \nJoin us for our General Meeting at the Emil Buehler Planetarium (members only) \n\nOur guests speakers this month are ONAJIDE SHABAKA and CAROL PRUSA\, two amazing artists who incorporate elements of the night sky and our universe into their paintings and sculptures. They are currently showcased at the Orlando Museum of Art and we encourage you to go see them at the 2024 FLORIDA PRIZE IN CONTEMPORARY ART until AUGUST 25\, 2024.\nDuring our September meeting\, while you are sitting in your comfortable chairs\, Onajide and Carol will be joining us via Zoom as their art will be displayed on the dome of the the planetarium. It will be a rare opportunity to exchange with these prized artists about their process of incorporating astronomy and stories in their art. We’ll have time for Q&A for your questions as well.\n\nCarol Prusa: “Dark Light” is an accomplished suite of recent works inspired by Prusa’s own life-changing experiences viewing total eclipses of the sun; other pieces pay tribute to pioneering women astronomers. Meticulously created by hand in the ancient silverpoint technique\, each piece required hundreds\, if not thousands\, of hours to complete. Each work\, then\, must qualify as something of an obsession\, and there certainly are worse obsessions than the eternal mysteries of the cosmos\, which still beguile the best and the brightest. (Boca Magazine art review\, Beauty and Unease Coexist in Carol Prusa’s “Dark Light”\, John Thomason\, August 23\, 2019) \n\nOnajide Shabaka: The crisscrossing juxtapositions within the exhibition echoes the connections Shabaka draws out\, like constellations\, between formal patterns in plants\, and their uses in various cultures and migrations between them. He places planetary movements\, in proximity to spirits sensed in the muck\, to the religious practices of the African diaspora. And he accompanies these with collected stories of consciousness\, grief\, determination\, resilience\, and adaptation. (Emerson Dorsch) \n\n\nWe will have to tackle some business concerning the society and possibly have a vote on board members term limit spearhearded by Mark Pernal our Board Member At Large officer (to be reconfirmed).\nOur Vp and Director of the Planetarium\, Derek Demeter\, who was in Europe early August\, will talk about his Eise Eisinga Planetarium visit in the Netherlands as well as Christian Huygens house\, where the Dutch astronomer discovered Saturn’s largest moon\, Titan\, on March 25\, 1655.\nThen we’ll have our usual club news and of course our member astrophotography showcase. We will be calling for your amazing photos soon\, stay tuned!\nAnd last but not least\, we will continue with our new format of workshops!
