Join us tonight at the Emil Buehler Planetarium at Seminole State College for our July meeting at 7 p.m. For those of you that didn't attend our June meeting please see the attached map for parking directions as we are still undergoing construction surrounding the planetarium. Parking is available near the D building which is adjacent to the planetarium.
Join us at 6:30 p.m. for refreshments outside in the lobby and a chance to socialize with your fellow CFAS members! Also at 6:45 pm join us inside the planetarium for a "Newbie Q&A session" where no question is too simple to ask.
Also we will be completely liquidating the CFAS library and are encouraging you to take some books home with you this evening. We will have the library on display tonight in the lobby.
Our mini programs for this month are:
"Constellation of the Month" by Bob Vogel
"Astronomy in Chile" by Derek Demeter
Our main program for this evening is the planetarium program "Women in Astronomy" presented by Derek Demeter.
Did you know that the study of stellar spectra, determining the luminosity of stars, and the modern cataloging of the night sky all originated with female astronomers? "Women in Astronomy" explores the contributions and discoveries of several female astronomers, including Caroline Herschel, Dorrit Hoffleit, Antonia Maury and Henrietta Swan Leavitt.
Astronomy Training Programs
We are now opening registration for the two July CFAS training seminars. The major information is as follows:
"Using and Maintaining Telescopes," held on July 15 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Buehler Planetarium.
This is primarily for beginning and intermediate astronomers who would like some guidance on how best to use their scopes, or to get the help necessary to get their scopes set up for the first time. The planetarium will be holding a small telescope viewing that evening from 7-11 p.m., and participants are welcome to stay and view the sky with us.
"Wide-Field and Telescope Astrophotography," held on July 29 from 7-11:30 p.m. at the Geneva Campus Gun Range.
Hosted by Richard Wright and Derek Demeter, this training seminar introduces the astronomer to the world of astrophotography. You may bring your own equipment for use and training. More detailed information will be sent out to those individuals who register for the course.
